A2.
Design Principles
Task
PART 1
-
Within a group of 5-6 members, each individual chose one Design Principle and create two Principle Models, each measuring 10cm x 10cm x 10cm
-
One selected Principle Model was chosen and five Orthographic Drawings were created: TOP VIEW, FRONT VIEW, RIGHT VIEW, LEFT VIEW, and BACK VIEW. These drawings were done on 120gsm A3 size paper in a 1:1 scale
PART 2
-
All five group members collaborated to merge the design principle models and explored different volumetric forms and spaces through articulation and integration.
-
The objective was to create a single Hybrid Model within the dimensions of 40cm height x 30cm length x 30cm width
-
The process was documented using diagrams, sketches, conceptual drawings, and annotations in a compilation of slides.
Progress
01
Developing the first individual model based on the design principle "movement"
02
Developing the second individual model also based on the design principle "movement"
03
Selected the first "movement" model and producing 5 orthographic drawings
04
Upon moving into part 2 of the assignment, sketches and brainstorming session were held with groupmates to come up with a design idea
05
A first mock-up model was made however due to lack of understanding of requirements the model was lacking in many aspects
06
A second mock-up model was done, this time with more thought into integrating elements and transitioning different elements from one another
Final Model
Outcome
My second assignment, "Design Principles," proved to be an enlightening journey that expanded my knowledge of shape and form transformation while deepening my comprehension of design principles. Throughout the project, I explored the intricate process of manipulating shapes and forms, witnessing how subtle changes can evoke entirely different aesthetics and meanings. This hands-on experience was invaluable in sharpening my skills as a designer. Additionally, working on this assignment in a group setting brought a new dimension to my learning. The combination of technical exploration and group dynamics has undoubtedly shaped me into a more well-rounded and capable designer, better prepared for future design challenges and collaborations.
TGC: Personal and Social Competencies
My second assignment, "Design Principles," offered valuable lessons beyond the realm of design itself. Amid the technical aspects, I discovered the importance of emotional self-regulation and empathy when working in a team. While collaborating with others, disagreements inevitably arose, and learning to navigate these situations with positivity and understanding was key. The assignment taught me how to empathize with my team members' perspectives and actively listen to their viewpoints, even when differing from my own. It allowed me to embrace diversity of ideas and find common ground towards a shared objective. By fostering a collaborative and respectful atmosphere, I realized that conflicting opinions could lead to innovative solutions and stronger outcomes. These interpersonal skills have proven invaluable not only in design projects but in various aspects of life, enhancing my ability to effectively interact with others and lead towards a common goal, even amidst disagreements.
