Starchitects
Task
I was required to choose my favorite "starchitect" and research their background, style, and personality. A preliminary sketch on A4 paper was created for a poster featuring the architect's name (30 pt) and a subtitle (20 pt) like "The Father of Independence" for Tadao Ando. A portrait or figure of the architect, three notable buildings they designed, and a 5- to 10-line description of their biography, interesting facts, or famous quotes was included. The poster was finalised on an A3-size paper, colored with a suitable palette to convey the essence and identity of the architect.
Outcome
Reflection
This assignment significantly improved my freehand drawing skills by incorporating self-expression, natural and man-made object drawing, architectural lettering, and tonal values. From sketching the architect's portrait to representing three buildings on an A4 paper, I gained a better understanding of spatial relationships and proportionality.
The inclusion of architectural lettering challenged my typography choices, emphasizing its impact on visual design. Crafting a concise biography and interesting facts within a limited space enhanced my communication skills.
Scaling up to the A3-size paper for the final poster required meticulous attention to detail and composition.
The second part of the assignment, focusing on coloring using watercolor or any medium, prompted me to experiment with techniques and choose a palette that captured the essence of the architect and expressed the film genre.
In conclusion, this assignment was a holistic exercise that not only enhanced my technical abilities but also deepened my appreciation for the nuances involved in creating visually compelling compositions.
